Dramatic Hodge close it was a green slate quarry in the Tilberthwaite Valley, near Langdale. First quarried in the 19th century right up until the 1960s.
Hodge close quarry is known as an extreme diving location for serious divers the quarry has a maximum depth of about 32m with visibility up to about 10m. There is a tunnel entrance at about 24m which leads to three chambers and two interconnecting tunnels.
A couple of miles north of Coniston, you can park for free at GR 315017 on OS map OL7.
